Per Bäckström is a professor in comparative literature at Karlstad university, since 2010. Before this he was an associate professor at Department for Culture and Literature, University of Tromsø, 1996–2010. He is chair for the membership commission of the European Network for Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies (EAM). He has published the monograph Enhet i mångfalden. Henri Michaux och det groteska (Unity in the Plenitude. Henri Michaux and the Grotesque, Ellerströms förlag 2005), which has been rewritten and translated to French as Le grotesque dans l’œuvre d’Henri Michaux. Qui cache son fou, meurt sans voix (L’Harmattan 2007). With Troels Degn Johansson, he has co-edited Sense and Senses in Aesthetics, NSU Press: Göteborg, 2003; and on his own the theme issue centre-Periphery of Nordli no. 21 2007.He has worked as a literary critic, and has published several studies of Mikhail Bakhtin, intermediality, avant-garde and neo-avant-garde (see cv). For the moment Per Bäckström studies the Nordic neo-avant-garde and the cross-aesthetic art of Öyvind Fahlström.
He received a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Lund, Sweden 2003, with the thesis Aska, Tomhet & Eld. Outsiderproblematiken hos Bruno K. Öijer (Ash, Emptiness & Fire. The outsider in Bruno K. Öijer), Lund: ellerströms förlag. He worked as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Tromsø from 1996 to 1999. In the autumn of 1999 he was also employed as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Library Studies. Between 2000–2010 he was employed as an Associate Professor at the Department for Culture and Literature. He is member of five different Nordic research networks: Nordic Summer University (NSU) , European association of Avant-garde and Modernism Studies (EAM), International Association of Scandinavian Studies (IASS), Nordisk Avantgarde Netværk (Nordic Avantgarde Network), Den moderna nordiska lyrikens former (The forms of moden Nordic poetry), Nordisk lyrisk modernism, The Future of Comparative Literature and the Nordic Perspective, Center for Metrical Studies (CMS) and Nordisk Bachtin Dialog (Nordic Bakhtin Dialogue).
